CHAPTER 7 With this in mind, and aware they had recorded no new material for over eighteen months, Garbage finished the world tour and reconvened after a brief Christmas break to start work in early 1997 on the follow-up album. This time they started the demos in a log cabin in Seattle! After a few weeks there, they relocated to Smart Studios for the more serious efforts towards the second record. These sessions were lengthy and private, and even led to completely fabricated rumours that Garbage were about to split up. In fact, the sessions were progressing very well, and throughout 1997, the new material began to take shape. Rumours suggest it will be far more experimental than the first album, and definitely more electronic based. Songs already completed include 'Push it', 'Temptation', 'Bend Me', and 'The Trick Is To Keep Breathing'. An opening single is due out at the end of January 1998, with the album probably released around March. Whatever happens with Garbage's second album, they have in some senses already made their impact. Emerging from the glut of grunge acts at the start of the 90's, Butch Vigs studio wizardry and creativity gave Garbage an edge that few contemporary bands could compete with. Complemented by Duke and Steve's own prodigious talent, and completed by Shirley Manson's sheer star quality and overt femininity, Garbage have been able to couple recorded genius with live brilliance. It is a heady mixture that a rare few bands can master, and those that do may take years to achieve this - Garbage, on the other hand, have only just started. |
